blythe elizabeth alexander was born on december 29, at 3:03 (and three seconds as her father liked to remind people) to richard and samantha alexander. the alexander were well prepared for her arrival... they had an older son named richard (junior to the family, richie to everyone else) and really thought they had it all under control. and they did, for a while... until they realized that blythe wasn't quite responding to all the noises she should. at her three month appointment, they had her hearing tested and realized she had significant hearing loss in her right ear. she was fitted with a hearing aid, and life went on for their family.
when blythe was eight years old richard alexander passed away, a brain anuerysm taking him in his sleep. needless to say the whole family was devastated. "he was only 40 years old" is all her mother or her grandparents said for a while when asked about richard's passing. they moved to pittsburgh, to be closer to her grandmother- nora flannery. unlike richard or samantha, nora was a stern woman, rarely affectionate and often frustrated. nora never imagined having to help raise her grandchildren- but when samantha needed her, she knew it was her duty. and she resented every minute of it.
once the alexanders were back on their feet (and nora was gone), they were able to come back to some semblance of normal. samantha started dating four years after richard's passing, meeting daniel walker at a pta meeting. his daughter erika was two years behind blythe... they married when she was 15. she and richie gave their mother away.
life after their mom married daniel was great. blythe liked having a little sister, and not too long after, they had a little brother - ryan- to add to the mix. in high school, she found her stride. being the oldest girl, she helped out in with the kids, and loved every minute of it. she loved showing her little sister and brother new things, taking them new places.
once high school was done, she knew working with kids was for her. wanting to stick close to home so she could help her mom with ryan, blythe applied to pitt, in hopes of joining their early childhood education program. while she was attending pitt- she got a job nannying. thats when everything took off- she loved working with kids, in a non-classroom environment. there was so much to teach them when you went out in the 'real' world, that a classroom was hardly necessary.
after graduating from pitt, she moved to boston, working as a nanny for a while and loving every minute of it. the children she had in her care were fun and exuberant... and eventually, like all children, they outgrew her. she said goodbye to the andersons when claire was 8 and marissa was 6.
that was two years ago. she's since gotten licensed to teach elementary school, and has happily been teaching kindergarten for the past two years, after spending two years teaching second graders. she prefers the younger ones- they're a little more challenging behavior wise, but you can't beat a hug from a 5 year old at the end of a rough day.
